In the competitive history of Manchester United, Robert Beckett is quite often the first name. When Newton Heath contested their inaugural FA Cup game, long before their entry into the Football League, Beckett was in goal and, thus, the first name in the lineup. The date was October 30th, 1886, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw with Fleetwood Rangers. Alas, as recent findings showed that Heath forfeited this tie before kickoff, Robert's claim is no longer legitimate.
He had made his bow for Heath a year earlier, on September 12th, 1885, as an 18-year-old local lad, and it is doubtful anybody else has had a better start in the club's long history - Kearsley were trounced 11-2! However, it was not until 1886-87 that Robert cemented his place as Heath's main custodian. This included him playing in all five matches during the run to the Manchester Senior Cup final. Alas, he only earned a losers' medal. Worst was to come next: Tom Hay was signed by the club and Beckett lost his place in the team. He did play briefly for Halliwell's reserve side in 1887 then joined Heaton Norris - now Stockport County - in 1888-89. No picture available. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
