Born in Barnsley, Yorkshire, he joined Manchester United's youth academy and made his first-team debut away to Ipswich Town in 1-2 defeat. Greenhoff quickly became a regular, recognized for his solid defensive skills and intelligent play.

Greenhoff was part of United's squad that won the 1977 FA Cup, playing a crucial role alongside Martin Buchan as United defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the final. Known for his precise tackling and excellent passing, he was appreciated for his defensive leadership and tactical awareness.

Over his 271 appearances with Manchester United, he scored 17 goals and became a crowd favorite for his dedication. In 1979, Greenhoff transferred to Leeds United for £350,000, where he played until 1982.
