It is not uncommon to see athletes from other sports interested in horse racing, but I think there is a bug that bit most of the players at Manchester United more than a decade ago. We can definitely spot a trend where suddenly the horse racing passion spread like a virus in Manchester United during the Sir Alex Ferguson times.
Maybe the legendary trainer is responsible for getting players into horse racing, who knows?
A bug or not, one thing is clear, there are a lot of former Manchester United players that are now very passionate about the sport. Some of them, are not only spectators and their passion has grown into racehorse ownership.
Although they didn’t get the same success as in the world of football, it is still something worth mentioning.
But why so many MU legends have turned to horse racing? Is it the money? The thrills? Or the fun weekends out with the mates?
Let’s find out.
Sir Alex Ferguson
We must start with the Manchester United GOAT, and probably the person most responsible for the team’s success, Sir Alex Ferguson.
Most football fans know him for his strategic brilliance on the sidelines as the best manager in the Red Devils’ history. He is also proven to be a successful racehorse owner and one of the biggest fans of the sport.
His highest achievement in the world of horse racing is with his horse, Rock of Gibraltar in the early 2000s.
Apart from being a racehorse owner, we can see that he truly appreciates the sport as he can be seen at some of the most popular events in the UK.
David Beckham
Now we switch from the legendary manager to a legendary player who might have moved to the US, but his UK horse racing roots stayed the same.
David Beckham has always been a popular figure even after retiring from professional football. Although he is still in the sport, only across the sea, his passion for the Sport of Kings remains the same. We have to say that he isn’t that hard-core as Sir Alex Ferguson, and didn’t dive into racehorse ownership.
However, he is a popular celebrity attending many horse racing events throughout the year. He can be spotted vising the Melbourne Cup in Australia, the Dubai World Cup, and of course, the Royal Ascot.
Considering that horse racing is also a fashion event, he and his wife Victoria definitely make heads turn at any horse racing event.
Rio Ferdinand
Rio Ferdinand, known for his solid defense on the pitch, has also made a name for himself in the world of horse racing.
Ferdinand not only attends races globally but also owns several racehorses. His transition from player to pundit extends to horse racing as well; he frequently appears on television and radio, offering expert analysis and commentary on significant races.
Michael Owen
Michael Owen, though more synonymous with Liverpool, had a notable stint at Manchester United and shares the horse racing passion. Owen has taken his love for the sport to another level by owning and breeding racehorses.
His breeding company has produced several winners, including victories at prestigious events like the Cheltenham Festival and the Royal Ascot. Who knows, maybe we will see his horses at Del Mar race entries. Owen's transition from scoring goals to breeding champions showcases his versatility and dedication.
Wayne Rooney
Wayne Rooney, another United legend, has a known love for betting on horse racing. Rooney’s foray into the world of horse racing isn’t as hands-on as Ferguson’s or Owen’s, but his enthusiasm is just as infectious. He’s often spotted at major racing events, and it’s no secret he enjoys placing a bet or two.
Although, it is fair to say that Rooney might had the biggest influence from Sir Alex Ferguson. He and his wife also became racehorse owners, and they’ve owned several horses including Switcharooney and Pippy. Unfortunately, he hasn’t had the same success as his trainer, since his horses retired with only one win.
Known for his tenacity and skill on the pitch, Rooney has transferred some of that passion to the racetrack. He owns several racehorses and is a frequent visitor to various racing events. Rooney's horses have competed in notable races, and his enthusiasm for the sport is well-documented. He often shares his experiences and insights on social media, further showcasing his love for horse racing.
Why Do Footballers Love Horse Racing?
You might wonder why so many footballers are drawn to horse racing. Here are a few reasons:
- Thrill of Competition: Just like football, horse racing is intensely competitive. The adrenaline rush of watching a race and having a stake in the outcome can be quite addictive.
- Love for Animals: Many footballers, like the general public, have a deep affection for animals. The elegance and power of horses are particularly captivating.
- Social Scene: Horse racing events, especially high-profile ones like the Royal Ascot, are social hubs. They offer a chance for these stars to network, socialize, and enjoy time with family and friends.
