Biography

Having originally arrived in Manchester with the intention of joining Newton Heath Central, J. Edgar Wilson ended up signing for their more illustrious neighbours from North Road instead. It was a clever coup by the Heathens, for here was a striker who came with a decent pedigree - he had been on Small Heath and Liverpool Stanley's books whereas his brother played for WBA in the Football League.
Commonly identified in the papers as 'J. Wilson' both before and after his time with Newton Heath, he curiously went by 'Edgar' for only the one year he spent at North Road. That was in 1889-90 when he cemented a permanent place up front, initially at inside-left but eventually on the extreme left flank. His competitive debut coincided with Heath's opening Football Alliance fixture - against Sunderland Albion on September 21st. Edgar was the star of the show, netting a brace in a 4-1 victory.
Wilson extended his scoring tendency for the rest of the campaign, claiming further braces against Sheffield United in a friendly and Long Eaton Rangers in the Alliance. In all, he obtained 14 goals in 40 outings at a rate of a goal every three games. The Heathens were on fire all season long, actually, and five other players also reached double figures for scoring.
After capping the season with a winners' medal in the Manchester Senior Cup, Wilson surprisingly left the Heathens to join Walsall Town Swifts in the summer of 1890, lodging in digs and getting a job as a brass turner. Walsall were an Alliance outfit too and, after making his debut against Small Heath, he went on to play 12 games in that competition. He only got two goals but they both came against the Heathens, though he wound up with a twisted knee for his trouble the first time around.
Edgar was ever-present in Walsall's opening 17 Alliance fixture in 1891-92 - in which he netted six goals - but, following an appearance against Bootle on March 19th, the left winger lost his place and did not play for Walsall again, even after their entry in the Football League in 1892-93. In fact, Wilson was not traced in the senior scene thereafter. By the turn of the century, he was back living in Aston Manor and working as a tool maker in a steel pen works. No picture available.
