William Sharpe first appeared in Newton Heath's colours in May 1890 in 0-4 friendly loss to Champions Preston. Two weeks later, he was a member of the club's first ever overseas game - an excursion to Belfast to meet Distillery. That too ended in a heavy defeat of 1-5. He could have been forgiven for doubting his decision to put an end to two years in Notts County's reserves, whom he had joined from Notts St. John's.
Regardless, Sharpe soon cemented a place in Heath's first team for the 1890-91 season, missing only two Alliance fixtures. The inside-left grabbed six goals which surprisingly was enough for him to finish as the club's top scorer! He also added another eight in friendlies during the campaign.
After playing just three Alliance matches in the first part of 1891-92, William moved on to neighbours Ardwick (now Manchester City) and made his debut against Newton Heath on December 19th, 1891. His left wing partner, incidentally, was Bob Milarvie who had earlier partnered him on his Heath debut in the Alliance the previous season.
William only made seven appearances for Ardwick before moving in the close season to Loughborough Town, then a Midland League outfit. He was described as "possessing great pace and plenty of shooting power". However, he was not fully fit, his left leg breaking down in his first three outings. Still, Sharpe recovered to play for Loughborough for two full seasons.
In May 1894, he found his way back into the Football League with Arsenal, making his debut against Lincoln in September. In all, he played 14 league and cup matches for the Gunners, netting four goals. He was soon on the move again in 1895, shacking up with Glossop North End who promptly made him captain. He responded by scoring a goal within three minutes of his debut versus Kettering!
Sharpe returned to Lancashire in 1896, joining Oldham County in the Lancashire League for a £3 signing-on fee and 35s thereafter. At times he was selected at half-back but he had more joy at outside-left where he impressed all onlookers in a match in February by dribbling the length of the field.
However, Sharpe was mostly deployed in the half-back line at his next club, Wigan County, where he was a member of their first ever Lancashire League fixture - a 5-1 drubbing of Southport Central in September 1897. Though at first he was a prominent presence in the lineup, Sharpe gradually lost his starting berth, eventually playing for Oldham Athletic until January 1901, when he retired to focus on his job as a wood sawyer.
