Just in case they did not have enough ex-Chirk players named Owen, Newton Heath signed another one in January 1889: inside-left George. He was not related to the siblings Bill and Jack, though he did leave brother Harry behind when he came to Manchester. And what an entrance he made? George netted on his debut in a friendly against Sheffield Wednesday then on his Football Combination bow against Port Vale on January 19th. He went on to play 20 matches in the remainder of the season, finally solving the club's inside-left dilemma.
In 1889-90, Owen made 34 overall appearances, though he was not very prolific - he reached double figures for scoring but five other Heathens outscored him! Nonetheless, George was a decent player. He was capped four times by Wales, including twice as a Heathen. In fact, in each of his first two outings, the Welsh selection included seven men who played for Heath at one time or another. His best display, mind, came in his last international appearance when he struck a hat-trick against Ireland in 1893.
On February 8th, 1890, George also represented the Manchester and District team against Warwickshire and got one of the goals in a 4-1 win. His big game pedigree stretched to the Welsh Cup too, for he appeared in four finals from 1887 to 1893, scoring in three of them and earning three winners' medals.
In the summer of 1890, Owen was transferred to West Manchester, making his debut on September 1st against Blackburn when his left wing partner was former Heathen teammate, James Gotheridge. Owen moved back to Chirk in April 1891, then to Druids in 1893, then back to Chirk again in 1895! He finally retired in 1896, though he could still be spotted on a football pitch as a referee.
