Biography
Local lad Edward Howles holds a unique distinction in Manchester United's history - he was the only man present in the lineup when Newton Heath contested their first ever Lancashire Senior Cup tie in 1883, first ever Manchester Senior Cup tie in 1884, and took to the field for the first ever FA Cup tie in 1886. The latter, of course, was swiftly forfeited before kickoff, rendering his distinction incomplete.
When he was first spotted in the team, in October 1883, Edward roamed in the front line. However, he soon dropped back into midfield where he spent the rest of his career. He was a mainstay of the team during 1884-85, a season in which he converted his only goal for Heath, and it was an important one: it helped defeat Dalton Hall to get the Heathens into the Manchester Cup final. Conversely, he was mainly a backup member of the squad in 1885-86, donning the colours only four times.
His situation remained the same the following campaign that, after playing for the last time - versus Blackburn Olympic in November 1886 - he decided to move around the corner to rivals Ten Acres, stating that there was no chance of obtaining a medal with Heath! As the Heathens were the reigning kings of Manchester football, this was a bold declaration, one which prompted the Athletic News to patronizingly comment: "We admire his pluck"! Howles found himself in familiar surroundings at Ten Acres - the likes of Moran, Longton, Siddons and Franklin were ex-Heath teammates - but there was no stopping the men from North Road. Ten Acres eventually changed their name to Newton Heath Central in 1888 then dissolved in 1890.
Edward also played for Heath's cricket side during the summers. No picture available, Thanks to Charbel Boujaoude for his tireless researching effort & the correct information on Edward Howles. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
