So many players trod the path from Annbank in Scotland to Newton Heath during the 1890s that there was bound to be some confusion. A case in point: when James Gourlay arrived in town in February 1899, it was reported that John Gourlay had joined the Heathens instead. To complicate matters more, this was such a common name in Scottish football at the time, at Annbank alone there were four different Gourlays during the 1890s!
Now, right winger John had left to Motherwell by the time James, a centre-back, came to Bank Street. A 12-stone specimen, James was only 20 years old at the time but had already served Annbank for many years. His new task was to fill the void left by James McNaught in the centre of Newton Heath's midfield. Five men had already failed during 1898-99, and James would be the sixth. A further two would give it a try before Billy Griffiths would finally succeed.
Gourlay got to play twice for Heath, and they came in the space of 5 days. He faced Aston Villa in Joe Cassidy's benefit game on February 14th then Loughborough in a Division Two encounter. Although Heath drew the first game and won the second, James was fated to move on shortly after. Thanks to Charbel Boujaoude for his tireless efforts & the correct information on James Gourlay.
