There were times when George Evans knocked the other fellow down, and there were other times when he ended up with a concussion! Such was the reality of life for a centre-forward in the rough days of the 1880s. That was the era during which he began his career, firstly with hometown side Handsworth Oakfield then later making a name for himself in Derby.
In 1883-84 and 1884-85, Evans played for Derby St. Luke's; In 1885-86 and 1886-87, he wore Derby County's colours; and in 1887-88 and 1888-89, he turned out for Derby Midland. And, if that was not enough, he also represented Derbyshire on several occasions over the years.
George finally ventured outside the city in 1889, destination WBA of Football League fame. His debut, coincidentally, came at Derby County and he was greeted with a round of applause! He only spent one season with Albion, playing 13 league matches and converting eight goals. He also added 12 goals in all other competitions for a very personally successful campaign.
Accordingly, when Evans joined Newton Heath in 1890, he was made club captain instead of the aging Jack Powell. The Heathens were in the Football Alliance and their much-changed forward line struggled to replicate goalscoring feats of yesteryear - their top scorer notched six goals, and Evans - with four - was not far behind. This included a goal on his Alliance debut against Darwen, which followed a goal on his earlier debut in a friendly versus Port Vale. George also added an important strike against Higher Walton in October to help Manchester United achieve their first ever FA Cup victory.
Unfortunately, Evans fell out of favour after the turn of the year, only appearing once more in the team, and even then it was as an emergency fill-in at right-half. It was not a surprise that he thus moved on, servicing several non-league sides, mainly Brierley Hill Alliance, Oldbury Town and Oldbury St. John's. Biography kindly provided by Charbel Boujaoude.
