Newton Heath's elevation from just another local side in Manchester to the city's superpower coincided with the Welsh influx in the second half of the 1880s. And right in the hub was Joseph Davies who took over the centre-half position and made it his property for four straight years.
Hailing from the outskirts of Ruabon, Joseph was one of five brothers who turned out for Druids, the crack team in Wales during the 1880s. He first appeared for them in 1882 then played in two successive Welsh Cup wins in 1885 and 1886. That summer he moved to Newton Heath along with the Doughty brothers, and he made his debut on September 18th when he scored against Stanley.
Davies was nearly always present in the team thereafter, participating in Newton Heath's inaugural fixtures in the Football Combination (1888), Football Alliance (1889) and FA Cup (1890). Additionally, after settling for a Manchester Cup losers' medal in 1887, he bagged the winners' kind in the following three campaigns, the highlight being when he got his name on the scoresheet as Denton were thrashed 7-1 in the 1888 edition.
By May 1890, Joseph had played around 170 times for the Heathens and, of the few games he missed, some were when he was representing Wales. His international bow came on February 4th, 1888, versus England, and he earned seven caps in all. The last two were obtained after he joined Wolverhampton Wanderers in the summer of 1890. Davies initially struggled to get into their Football League lineup, making just two appearances in 1890-91, but he became a first-team regular in the next two seasons.
In 1894, Joseph returned to Druids for a brief spell, by which time his decreasing mobility had restricted him to a full-back role. He retired by the end of 1894-95 and made a living first in farming and later as a butcher in his home town of Cefn Mawr.
