From 1883-84 through 1887-88, a great number of Newton Heath appearances were credited to an E. Davies half the time and an H. Davies the other half, with one appearance - the most important of the lot - allocated to an L. Davies: in Manchester United's supposed first ever FA Cup tie, at Fleetwood Rangers in October 1886. Yet they all belonged to a single player, one Heber Davies, whose name's phonetic similarity to 'Eber' caused all the confusion.
Heber was one of the first handful of Heathens to turn professional. The earliest occasion he was spotted in the lineup was on December 1st, 1883, in a 4-0 thrashing of Manchester Arcadians. He slotted in at outside-left, though he would go on to establish himself as an inside-forward thereafter. That said, he was likely to turn up anywhere across the front line if needed.
Although some 60-odd appearances have been traced to his name, Heber surely played in many more, at a time when coverage of Heath's matches was not very comprehensive. He formed an impressive partnership with James Gotheridge on the left wing, their "short passing being a treat to witness". His best season was 1886-87 when he was constantly present in the lineup, however, his time at North Road came to an end after a 1-7 hammering at Burnley in April 1888.
The 5' 5", 9st 5lb Davies enjoyed several memorable occasions with Newton Heath, such as playing in the Manchester Senior Cup final in three consecutive seasons, losing in 1885 and 1887, and winning in 1886. He was buried on August 25th, 1925. Thanks to Charbel Boujaoude for his tireless researching effort & the correct information on Heber Davies. No picture available.
