Biography
Carlos Noom Quomah Baleba was born on 3 January 2004 in Douala, Cameroon. A powerful, athletic and technically gifted midfielder, Baleba developed from humble beginnings to become one of the Premier League’s most highly regarded young players before securing a move to Manchester United.
Baleba’s football education began in Cameroon, where he trained with Futur Soccer FC before joining the renowned École de Football des Brasseries du Cameroun. The academy has produced numerous Cameroon internationals and provided Baleba with the technical and physical foundations required to pursue a professional career. His father, Eugène, had previously played professional football in Cameroon and South Africa before becoming a coach. He played an important role in his son’s development, introducing demanding fitness, agility and ball-control exercises from an early age. Baleba’s determination, athletic ability and confidence in possession soon distinguished him from other young players in Cameroon.
In January 2022, Baleba moved to France to join Lille. He initially represented the club’s reserve side but progressed rapidly and made his senior debut on 7 August 2022, appearing as a substitute during a 4–1 Ligue 1 victory over Auxerre.
Under manager Paulo Fonseca, Baleba established himself as one of Lille’s most promising young midfielders. His strength in possession, ability to evade opponents and willingness to carry the ball through midfield attracted interest from several leading European clubs. Although still inexperienced, he demonstrated the physical and technical qualities needed to succeed at a higher level.
Brighton & Hove Albion signed Baleba in August 2023, identifying him as a long-term successor to Moisés Caicedo. He agreed a five-year contract and made his Brighton debut as a substitute against Bournemouth on 24 September 2023. His first start followed against Liverpool in October. Baleba was gradually introduced to Premier League football during his first season. The patient approach allowed him to adjust to the pace and physical demands of the English game while improving his positional awareness and decision-making. He became a more influential member of Brighton’s midfield during the 2024–25 season.
Baleba scored his first goal for the club in a League Cup victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers on 18 September 2024 before registering his first Premier League goal against Chelsea later that month. One of his most memorable Brighton moments arrived against West Ham United on 26 April 2025. Baleba struck a spectacular long-range winner during stoppage time to secure a 3–2 victory. The strike was subsequently named the Premier League Goal of the Month for April 2025, while his overall progress earned him Brighton’s Young Player of the Season award.
Baleba developed into a dynamic central midfielder capable of contributing in both defensive and attacking phases. Naturally left-footed, he can operate as a holding midfielder or in a more energetic box-to-box role. His principal strengths include his acceleration, physical power, tackling, ball recovery and ability to carry possession through pressure.
He is particularly effective when receiving the ball in confined areas. Baleba can use his strength and close control to escape challenges before driving into open space. His mobility enables him to cover large areas of the pitch, protect his defence and support attacks. Although primarily valued for his midfield work, his powerful shooting also makes him dangerous from outside the penalty area.
At international level, Baleba represents Cameroon. He made his senior international debut on 8 June 2024, starting a 4–1 World Cup qualifying victory over Cape Verde. His emergence provided Cameroon with an athletic and technically progressive midfield option for the country’s next generation.
Manchester United pursued Baleba as part of an attempt to strengthen and modernise the club’s midfield. A transfer from Brighton was reported to have been agreed in August 2026, with the proposed deal valued at more than £60 million and a five-year contract prepared for the Cameroon international.
His arrival at Old Trafford gives United a midfielder with Premier League experience, considerable physical presence and significant potential for further improvement. Baleba’s ability to regain possession, resist pressure and move the ball forward should provide energy and balance in central midfield.
Still only 22 when he made the move, Baleba joined Manchester United with the opportunity to develop into an important long-term player. His journey from Douala to Lille, Brighton and Old Trafford reflects his ambition, resilience and determination to compete at the highest level.
