Amad Magic (2026)
We begin with the most recent decisive contribution by a Red. In Cote d’Ivoire’s opening group stage match against Ecuador, winger Amad Diallo came off the bench to score a dramatic 90th minute winner to get the African nation’s campaign off to a flying start.
It was a surprise to see Amad named on the substitutes bench, but the 23-year-old reminded everyone around the world of his talents by sliding home a square ball from Wilfried Singo to send the Cote d’Ivoire fans into delirium.
The goal sealed the nation’s fourth win at a World Cup. They will want to improve on past editions though and beat their record of four points in the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
Robin Has Liftoff (2014)
Manchester United fans will need no reminding of the incredible header Robin van Persie scored in Netherland’s 5-1 thumping of reigning European champions at the time, Spain. The Spanish national team were on an all-time high after winning the three previous major tournaments ahead of World Cup 2014.
However, after taking the lead through a Xabi Alonso penalty in the 27th minute, Robin took centre stage. The Dutch captain made a piercing run behind Sergio Ramos to latch onto Daley Blind’s 40-yard diagonal. What Robin did next was genius. Seeing Iker Casillas off his line, RvP looped a diving header over the goalkeeper from just inside the penalty area.
The goal was nominated for the Puskas award that year, losing out to James Rodriguez’s volley against Uruguay. However, the goal will go down forever as one of the greatest scored by a Manchester United player at a World Cup. And assisted by a player who would go on to join United that August.
Captain Golden Balls (2001)
One of the most dramatic moments conjured up by a Manchester United player was not even at a World Cup. On 6th October 2001, David Beckham scored perhaps his most memorable free kick in the third minute of stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw against Greece that sent England to World Cup 2002.
After Teddy Sheringham won a dubious free-kick 25 yards away from goal and dead centre, the stage was set. The England captain whipped an effort into the top left corner to rescue his country. All done in front of a raucous English crowd at Old Trafford.
World Cup Winners (1966)
We have saved the best until last. Despite all the heroics in the past few decades, the most memorable contribution from the Red Devils must be in the 1966 World Cup when England triumphed over everyone else.
England fans looking at the World Cup betting odds for 2026 will be happy to see their country towards the top of the favourites list alongside Spain and France as The Three Lions try to win the tournament again sixty years later. But to date, 1966 remains the sole tournament triumph.
In that year, Bobby Charlton, Nobby Stiles, and John Connelly all played their part in the success, with the trio all starting in the opening 0-0 draw with Uruguay. Stiles and Charlton would remain regulars in the starting eleven, with United legend, Charlton, finishing the tournament with three goals.
A crucial brace against Eusebio’s Portugal in the semi-finals went down as the standout performance for Charlton, while Stiles enhanced his reputation as a midfield destroyer. Stiles operated close to Charlton in the midfield and played a vital role in the semi-final by marking Eusebio out of the match.
