Manchester United Are Two Points from Champions League
Old Trafford finally has something to celebrate. Manchester United beat Brentford 2-1 on Monday night, climbing to third in the Premier League with 61 points from 34 matches. Anyone betting world cup football would own every headline this summer didn't account for a Premier League run-in this tight. Two more points from four remaining fixtures will seal United's return to Europe's top competition after two years outside it.
No one expected this outcome in January, the club just fired Ruben Amorim, its second coach for the season. Michael Carrick moved from "Middlesbrough" to a temporary position and for 12 matches in the league achieved a result of eight wins and no losses. This series made "United" the team in its best shape in 2026.

Once Carrick told him to stay in the box and attack deliveries, the goals arrived: seven in eight games through February and March, then a composed finish against Brentford on Monday to double the lead before half-time.
The other shift was less visible. Players who had been publicly criticised under Amorim found themselves backed in press conferences. Casemiro, written off by large sections of the fanbase, has nine Premier League goals this season. Harry Maguire returned from suspension against Brentford and headed the ball back across goal for the opener.
A Nervy Win That Proved a Point
Monday's match was no cruise. Brentford, chasing European football of their own under Keith Andrews, created several clear chances. Igor Thiago failed to convert two of them. Senne Lammens made a string of saves. Mathias Jensen pulled one back late with a long-range strike.
A few months ago, United would have folded. This time, the back line held. Ayden Heaven, 19, helped organise the defence alongside Maguire. Carrick called the performance "controlled but not comfortable." At this stage of the season, that kind of grind is worth more than a 4-0 stroll.
A Packed Summer Looms Behind the Finish Line
Securing a Champions League spot answers one question but opens several more. Carrick is on contract through May. INEOS has said nothing about whether the job becomes permanent, and the club's recent pattern has been to look externally.

Players returning from World Cup duty in late July will get roughly four weeks before the next Premier League season starts. Whoever manages the club needs to be in place early enough to handle it.
Where This Leaves United
Third place, 11 points ahead of sixth place "Brighton", with four games left before the end of the season. "Arsenal" leads with 73 points, "City" with 70, having the game in reserve. After the match on Monday, Carrick told reporters that they should not be too happy to advance to the next stage and that the team should fight for second place.
The gap between an interim who steadied the ship and a long-term appointment who builds on it will define the next 12 months at Old Trafford. Carrick has proved the squad can compete when the setup suits the personnel. What the club does with that information matters more than anything left on the pitch this season.
