Odd Megaways Slots Themes

When it comes to playing slots online, UK casino fans are pretty demanding, and casinos are always working hard to find new ways to engage their customer base.

Over the years, the online gaming sector has created many new features to attract customers, but few have been as successful as the relatively simple piece of software put together by an Australian company called Big Time Gaming (BTG) in 2015.

What are Megaways Slots?

The first online slot games were simple, little more than on-screen representations of old-fashioned fruit machines, but as internet and gaming technology improved, game designers began to experiment with the standard format of the slot game.

BTG’s Megaways mechanic was launched in a game called Dragon Born, although it wasn’t until the debut of Bonanza Megaways, which came out in 2016, that the game really caught the attention of casino gamers.

The Megaways concept is simple, but it radically transforms the slot gaming experience. In standard slot games, there are a set number of symbols on each reel, and a fixed number of paylines. But with a Megaways game, a piece of software called a random reel modifier generates a random number of symbols for each of six reels, up to a maximum of seven per reel.

This means that the number of symbols that can be adjacent and form a payline changes with each spin of the reels, and the maximum number of paylines is 117,649. Understandably, this proved popular and now there are thousands of Megaways casino slot games. The Megaways mechanic has been incorporated into hundreds of different themes, as developers try ever more imaginative ways to stand out from the crowd, from games based on football history to the latest movie-license tie-in. Here are six of the most unusual.

Fluffy Favorites Megaways

Released in 2022 by Eyecon, this quirky game has an uncommon funfair theme, and as well as the Megaways feature, which in this case gives players 46,656 ways to win through the cascading reels mechanic. The reel symbols are in the form of cuddly animals, and players can trigger free spins with expanding multipliers by landing three or more scatter symbols. The potential wins here are up to x20,000 the size of the original bet, and the combination of the Megaways mechanic and the air of nostalgia evoked by the funfair makes for an enjoyable gaming session.

Big Cat Rescue Megaways

Another 2022 release, this time by Red Tiger, is an entertaining slot themed around wildlife conservation, and in particular, lions and tigers. In fact, it was produced in collaboration with Big Cat Rescue to support animal welfare initiatives, giving it a dimension of social responsibility that you don’t usually expect from a slot game. Rich graphics and real jungle sound effects make for a lively safari environment, and there’s the usual Megaways total of 117,649 ways to win, as well as cascading reels, and free spins with progressive multipliers to keep players interested.

Rick and Morty Megaways

This slot was created by Blueprint Gaming and launched in 2020. Based on the famous animated show, it is a Megaways classic that capture the show’s zany, sci-fi vibe with characters and catchphrases and a range of free spin modes all drawn from famous episodes. Along with the Megaways mechanic, there are cascading reels and bonus features, such as multipliers, to keep this high volatility slot interesting. Since its release, this unusual combination has appealed to fans of the series and thrill-seekers alike.

Megaways Jack

A quirky 2020 title from Iron Dog Studio, this is a medium volatility slot with a 96.2% RTP based on the famous Jack and the Beanstalk story. As well as the Megaways feature, the game has some unique mechanics. Our top pick of these is the Magic Harp, which awards multipliers or free spins, and players can also boost their payout chances by triggering bonus features and climbing the cartoon beanstalk. Vivid graphics add to what is an immersive fairy-tale gaming experience.

Worms Reloaded Megaways

From Blueprint Gaming, this slot is inspired by the beloved Worms video game series, and it sees players wage cartoon battles with worms wielding bazookas and airstrikes as they spin the reels. It's a hugely entertaining mix of chaos, combat, and humour. As well as the 117,649 ways to win, there are cascading reels, and a unique free spin round where players can choose between different worm commanders, each with tailored bonus features. The slot’s visuals really pop and add to the charm.

Holy Diver Megaways

We end our list, appropriately enough, with a Megaways title from Big Time Gaming. This lot takes its inspiration from classic fantasy quests and features a knight on a journey to collect jewels and slay monsters. The game offers a unique level-up mechanic where the knight moves along the bottom of the screen during gameplay, interacting with treasure chests to reveal wilds, multipliers, and free spins. Its visuals blend medieval landscapes with dazzling gemstone symbols, accompanied by an epic soundtrack, making it a rewarding but challenging game.
