However, Moyes had a particularly hard time filling the massive shoes left behind by Ferguson. He showed an uncanny inability to manage the high expectations at the club. Inconsistency and a lack of direction were unfortunate stains on his tenure as manager, which led to United’s seventh-place finish in the Premier League, their worst in over 20 years. It resulted in his dismissal before the end of the season.
Louis Van Gaal (2014-2016)
With a reputation as a strict disciplinarian and tactical mastermind, Louis Van Gaal took over the reins from Moyes in 2014. Gaal was able to secure the FA Cup in 2016, and his tenure led to a fourth-place finish in his first season and a fifth-place finish in his second. Van Gaal was immediately dismissed after the FA Cup win, as the club’s higher-ups wanted a more dynamic approach.
Jose Mourinho (2016-2018)
Jose Mourinho was appointed in 2016. He came with a wealth of experience and a proven track record, so he was a pretty safe bet. Erik ten Hag (2022-Present)
Erik ten Hag came in with a great reputation for developing young talent. His first season looked promising - he led the team to win the League Cup. However, his second season was marred by United having some of their worst performances in decades. Still, Ten Hag’s performance as manager is not deemed to be the worst. Although his future seems uncertain, he has shown potential to be able to restore the club to what it once was.
Best Manager Overall
Jose Mourinho is, without a doubt, the best manager overall since the post-Ferguson era. The legendary club enjoyed further success under his tenure. Mourinho boasts the highest win percentage (58.33%) and points-per-game ratio (1.97).
Worst Manager Overall
The title of worst manager of Manchester United overall is awarded to Ferguson’s handpicked successor, David Moyes. Moyes committed several blunders that led to him being dismissed. He was unable to maintain the high standards set by the Scotsman, leading United to a disappointing seventh place in the Premier League.
Thus far, the club’s board has taken several chances on different managers in the hopes that they would lead the Red Devils on the path to consistent victory. Hopefully, with Erik Ten Hag at the helm, Manchester United will be cashing in on many more and continuous wins. |
