There was more than one way that David McFetteridge's name was spelled during his playing career, with 'McFetridge' being a common variation. Either way, it was a footballing family, for both David's brother and nephew served Burnley at one time or another.
Born in Ireland but raised in Eastwood, Renfrewshire, David first rose to prominence in the 1891 close season when he went from being a bit-part player for Scottish side Cowlairs to becoming a mainstay of Bolton Wanderers' attack during 1891-92. Patrolling the left wing, he made his Football League debut against Darwen on September 5th then scored five goals in 23 matches as the Wanderers finished third in the table.
1892-93 was not as successful a season, McFetteridge turning out just twice for Bolton, and he headed back to Scotland to assist Cowlairs in 1893-94. Despite them being in Scotland's Division Two now, David still attracted Newton Heath's attentions, and they offered him a contract in the summer of 1894. However, it soon emerged that he had already re-signed for Cowlairs so the authorities duly handed him a one-month suspension. Heath were forced to cancel his registration on October 16th and, thus, David returned to Cowlairs and completed nine league matches.
This was not the end of the matter. On Good Friday 1895, Heath's reserves began their encounter with Berry's FC one man short, only for David to promptly turn up and fill in at left-back. The next day - April 13th, 1895 - he was even put in the first team's front line as injuries severely hampered Heath in their league tussle with Newcastle. McFetteridge's long-awaited Heathen debut was delayed further still when kickoff was put back once Newcastle's captain received a telegram informing him his father had just died! Regardless, the Geordies raced into a 3-0 lead necessitating another reshuffle in Heath's lines. McFetteridge was switched to full-back and he helped steady the defence thereafter. Alas, he himself picked up a knock and missed the remaining two matches of the campaign.
As it was, David's appearances for Heath's first team could be counted on the finger of one thumb. He
soon left Bank Street and did not resurface until October 1896 when he was spotted playing for nearby
Stockport County... briefly: McFetteridge played two games in the Lancashire League and just as many in
