The Watney Cup was a short-lived pre-season tournament sponsored by the brewers. The teams scoring the most goals in each of the four divisions in the previous season were invited to take part.

The cup took the two highest scoring teams from each of the four divisions (excluding those recently promoted, relegated or those engaged in European competition) and pitted them against each other in a straight knockout tournament.
