Pre Match Press Conference Highlights

On the New Season & the Title race

"“Everyone is optimistic at the start of the season and I am no different,” says Sir Alex.

“In terms of who’ll be challenging, the interesting one is Everton. They have got all their players back. Last season the first half of the campaign was a nightmare for them with injuries to major players like Mikael Arteta and Phil Jagielka.

“They were big losses to manager David Moyes. Now they are fit they could be an interesting prospect for the season.

“I would also expect Liverpool to improve with Roy Hodgson. Tottenham are on the upswing given their fortunes of last season and Harry Redknapp’s experience.

“I would have put Villa up there also with the job Martin O’Neill has done over the last three years being quite significant. Now there seems to be uncertainty there.

“City have to be in the top four. They have spent money and the expectation increases with that. They will be challengers no doubt about that. You expect a challenge from there.

“Roberto Mancini is settled in the job now. He will know the strength of the players he had last year. He has added Silva, Toure, Boateng and Kolarov. I said last season they could easily go and buy another team. That is a possibility again.

“They have got to be in the pecking order. They have individuals who can win games and score a goal like Tevez and Adebayor. I don’t think they will be looking on a bad start as a possibility.

“What does all that tell you? It tells you it is going to be a competitive league. We are all aiming to be in the champions League. That is the priority at all these clubs.”

On Winning the League

“My thoughts are not necessarily on the top four we have to think about how we are going to win this league,”

“You have to think that Chelsea, having won it last season, are going to be the favourites. The team who win it the previous year are the team you have to try and knock off their perch. Chelsea are in that position.
