10 man
Manchester United managed to give Wolves the slip
after a Danny Welbeck goal gave the defending
Champions safe passage to the next round of the
Carling Cup.
As
totally expected the Boss SAF fielded a vastly
different side than the Manchester derby as Polish
Keeper Tomas Kuszczak was between the sticks,
Neville, Evans, Brown & Fabio Da Silva (later sent
off) the back four, Nani & Welbeck wide with Carrick
& Gibson central & Owen & Macheda upfront.
SAF also
gave youngsters Joshua King & Magnus Eikram squad
numbers & places on the bench with the impressive
Ritchie Da Laet joining Tosic, Ferdinand, Ben Amos &
Antonio Valencia on the bench.
With both
team unable to stamp authority on the match, the
plodding nature of the game changed after both
United defenders Wes Brown & Jonny Evans failed to
clear a long ball aimed at the Peter Crouch like
Stefan Maierhofer and as the pacy young Brazilian
chased the ball, he tangled with Kightly before
falling to the ground & sticking out a arm, thus
tripping his opponent before he was clean through on
goal resulting in a straight Red card.
Soon
after Ritchie De Laet was introduced as Kiko Macheda
was sacrificed.
The game
reverted back to its original plodding pace with
little in the way of highlights & talking points
until Owen managed to head a chance at Hahnemann
with the keeper saving with ease.
Hahnemann
was soon involved again when shortly before half
time Danny Welbeck closed down the keepers attempted
clearance only for the ball to reach a safe spot for
Wolves & spare the stickman's blushes.
IN the
second period United searched for a goal but poor
display of crossing from Nani kept the Reds to
restricted goal scoring opportunities, the young
Portuguese star seemed to be able at will to take on
his man, but delivering a dangerous ball he still
has to learn.
Welbeck
almost set up Darron Gibson but the Republic of
Ireland star failed to trouble Wolves & Nani should
have done much better when given the opportunity to
feed Carrick after Gary Neville fed the Portuguese
winger.
The
breakthrough finally came almost on the hour when a
slick move from the largely disappointedly & quiet
Michael Carrick found Welbeck, and exchange of
passes with Owen saw Welbeck finish with style in
the bottom corner.
With the visitors limited to free kicks & the odd
shot, SAF must have saw enough to realise the lack
of threat & gave a full debut to Norwegian Joshua
King who replaced Welbeck & the young Norwegian did
not disappoint in a busy and industrious cameo role. |
