 Match Review

Keith "Hitler" PowerIt comes with great sadness that the West Cumbria Manchester United Supporters Club unexpectedly lost one of their life long members last week, Mr Keith Power Father to Steve & Husband of Susan suddenly passed away.

Keith was a member of the branch for twenty years plus & will be missed by his friends & family.  He was a important figure in the West Cumbria Football Leagues where he was heavily involved in coaching Kids Football for amateurs team Cleator Moor Celtic.

Our thoughts are with Keith's family at this time.

A Carlos Tevez penalty in the 73rd minute was enough for United to progress past a spirited QPR on Tuesday night, Tevez converted the penalty after Substitute Danny Welbeck had changed the game for the Reds before being fouled by Peter Ramage in the Stretford End penalty area.

SAF had rang in the changes with Gary Neville, Anderson & Ji Sung Park the only survivors of the Arsenal defeat of last Saturday as youth were given the chance to shine against Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers.

Maybe not to this level but the Reds were dominant from start to finish in a half which saw Kuszczak fail to touch the ball the whole half, the Pole instead treat the Stretford End to his repertoire of stretches whilst trying to keep warm.

Once again United failed to change masses of possession into anything like a goal as Radek Cerny in the visitors' goal saved several shots as the game wore on.

Tevez shot low at Cerny & Anderson finally struck an effort on target which almost fell to Ji-Sung Park after the QPR keeper fumbled.

On a poor drab night in Manchester the rain swirled as Anderson & Tevez saw more and more of the ball, the Brazilians' passing however was not up to scratch as passes never reached intended targets almost giving the impression he was trying too hard.

With nothing much in the line of highlights in a poor 1st half, the Reds returned for the second half with more of a purpose, this however was not matched when it came to hitting the net as Anderson & Nani before the Portuguese winger had went close, embarrassed themselves with shots that could have ended up in the car parks.

In another decent performance JSP after brilliant skill from the ever impressing Da Silva struck a shot against the post, Tevez from close range then shot at Cerny who saved & tipped the shot over the bar as United continued to dominate.

Danny Welbeck was then introduced for Possebon & the Manchester born Youngster gave the Reds some penetration & urgency.

With Kuszczak bored shi*less in goal in East Stand, the Polish stopper finally got his hands on the ball after a tame shot from Blackstock was gather easily.

The Reds finally got the breakthrough their domination deserved after Nani passed a ball to Welbeck in the box and he was then tackled and fouled by Peter Ramage leaving Phil Dowd no choice but to award the Reds a penalty.

Carlos Tevez after a little debate with Nani then stepped up & dispatched the spot kick, sending sending Cerny the wrong way.

QPR gave the Reds & fans a scare when the visitors found the back of the net when Di Carmine beat Kuszczak, the goal was thankfully offside & a small spell of pressure also saw Ledesma shoot wide when Dexter Blackstock's shot was saved.

United hung on to a deserved win and will find themselves in the pot for the next round after decent effort from QPR & a great test for the young ones!!
