Two top
draw quality saves form EVDS & a second half header from
Ex Sporting Lisbon's Ronaldo saw
United survive & take a rare three away points in the
opening game of the 2007/08 European Champions League
Campaign. In a rather poor 1st half on a really poor pitch
your reporter after many drama's getting to Lisbon saw
another toothless performance.
The game also saw Wayne Rooney make a injury comeback &
the forward had a busy game in the way of running & little
impact on creation.
With
United seemingly happy, boring all to sleep with a patient
counter attacking style the Reds once again showed no
teeth in attack & no movement, this seemed to suit Lisbon
who continued with success long range efforts, and it was
only a matter of time before the home side found their
range forcing EVDS to make a incredible save from
Liedson's
effort with one hand.
United then replied with Nani as the former ex Lisbon
winger shot narrowly wide almost on the half hour, shortly
after Nani would find himself in the referee's notebook
after a poor challenge on
Veloso.
The second half was in contrast more interesting as
Ronaldo began to create, a cross for Ryan Giggs wasn't
controlled enough but Lisbon would soon witness excellent
delivery & finishing product as the Reds took the lead.

Tinker, Peter & Your Reporter |
Rooney
moved to the left wing collecting the ball, an exchange
including Ronaldo, Michael Carrick and Paul Scholes saw
the ball at Wes Brown's feet, the Manchester born Defender
who has taken unnecessary stick this season due to his
unenviable task of doing an true centre half's
impression of an nimble attacking full-back then let a
Beckham-esq cross bounce straight of an unmarked Ronaldo's
head beating keeper
Stojkovic.
Louis Nani then almost did the unthinkable & treat
fans to a game where United score more than one goal but a long-range effort
was saved by Stojkovic.
United then made their 1st substitution of the
night with Louis Saha
entering the game in exchange for Rooney, who on fair reflection had
worked hard if maybe not posing a penetrative threat..
MUFCINFO.COM's MOTM was then decided as Lisbon went close to drawing level
only for the Big Dutch Stickman to save again from Tonel's header after a Veloso cross.
Anderson then replaced Ryan Giggs before Ronaldo
then left the
Estádio José Alvalade to a standing ovation
from the home Lisbon fans, albeit limping and a possible doubt for Chelsea
on Sunday.
MISSED FLIGHTS, IN GROWING TOENAILS & WARTHOGS
The latest effort to view some European football by the West Cumbria
Reds couldn't have got any worse, our trip which cost £700 for the three
of us may the money used as well have been burnt before our very eyes as
flying from Glasgow Airport to Amsterdam for a connecting flight to Lisbon
ended in total disaster. With two hours to burn if we had have made
it to Amsterdam anyone in their right mind would have expected to make it
however.
Due to a Frank Spencer like pilot oversight which saw a taxiing plane
leave the runway for the grass siding, the plane we were to catch for
Lisbon had to be diverted to a localised Airport to refuel knocking off
1.40 mins off our window to catch the Lisbon flight.
Upon dashing as fast as our fitness levels & in growing toe nail (what a
Soldier you are Tinker!!) would allow, we missed our plane which was
agonisingly beginning to move out onto the runway.
So stuck in Schipol Airport we made our way to Customer Services to be
told we would have to catch another flight the next day at 12.40pm, so a
long wait in the Airport or pay for another Hotel would be our next move.
The receptionist informed us that we would struggle to get any sort of
Hotel room and if we did it would be miles away & expensive, so a quick
call to some very good friends of mine Alex Smit & Ron Snellen from the
Dutch Mancunians to see maybe if they could help out, very accommodating
Alex (thanks for the efforts mate) made a few calls to help out but
miraculously we found a cheap Hotel, close by & opted to go for the Hotel.

Tinker & Peter |
We had the fortune of being
able to fly 1st class on the way over to Lisbon but it suddenly dawned on
me that we had booked a small room & folks you do not want to share a
small room with the Warthog brothers
I was travelling with, so true to form if you do know me, I slept once
again in a random country on a Hotel Room toilet floor, all due to the
Snoring antics of my travelling compatriots.
CANCELLED HOTELS & ROMA
If the hassle of obtaining tickets from the ground wasn't bad enough
with ID etc etc, we would then be dealt the biggest blow yet as our Hotel
in Lisbon we had booked had due to our delay was sold to the next customer
leaving us with no Hotel Room in Lisbon, after calming a certain Mr Calvin
down & dealing with Tinkers tantrum outburst of leaving the Hotel, i
thought it best to try & persuade the Hotel Manager to ring around a few
other Hotels.
SUCCESS!!!!! a certain Hotel Roma which rang bells in my mind had a cheap
room, so another Taxi ride across the City saw us at the same Hotel we
stayed in when Benfica knocked us out a few years earlier, so only two
stops from the Stadium on the Underground & a massive treble room, our
fortunes changed, but bank balances had a unnecessary chunks missing!!
A BIG THANKS !!.
To Alex who despite the lack of time tried to get us sorted & was more
than obliging to travel 45 minutes at short notice to help out.
And a Big up goes to
the man in Hotel NacioNal for sorting our Room in Lisbon & Tinker &
Peter!!, lets hope Kiev is easier!!
United's Man of the Match
Not many candidates, but in the importance of the
saves EVDS wins it.
MUFC.COM's Reaction
Toothless in the 1st half & a sad sad lack of movement,
United will get better its just a matter of when, at least we have a rare
away win in Europe.
Was our prediction correct?
YES! We said 1-0. MUFC INFO 1 v 6 Wrong Predictions.
Milestones
SAF's 74th victory of his UCL career.
Cristiano Ronaldo's 5th UCL goal of his United career
& 51st goal overall.
United's

Pie storyline, and with a mugshot like that no wonder they would
not let you in the hotel, next time smile for the camera
