MANCHESTER UNITED v ENGLISH CLUBS IN EUROPE
History tells us it
doesn't often happen, but Manchester United were today
paired up against English counterparts Chelsea in the 2010-11 UEFA Champions
League Quarter finals, a draw thus guaranteeing the two teams
will face each other a grand total of 5 times in the
current 2010-2011 campaign.
United having already beaten
Chelsea 3-1 way back in August in the Charity
Shield recently tasted defeat in fixture number two, when the
teams second clash of the season at Stamford Bridge saw
the Blues emerge victorious with a 2-1 score line.
The Reds are now set to play Chelsea at Old Trafford in
the League in early May, as well as the aforementioned
European Cup double header in early April.
Trawling through the record
books sees the Reds paired with English opposition a
total of seven times and three competitions.
The Cup Winners Cup in 1963 saw United paired with Jimmy
Greaves' Tottenham Hotspur before two years later in
1965, Everton were beaten in the Fairs Cup (an old
version of the UEFA Cup/Europa League.
Forty
plus years later, United as most of us remember beat
Chelsea on penalties to win the clubs third European Cup
in 2008, before Arsenal were beaten 4-1 on aggregate on
route to the disappointment of a 0-2 defeat by Barcelona
in the final in Rome.
