Manchester United have won the FA Cup a record 11 times

Manchester United were given arguably the hardest & most mouth-watering of starts after being paired against their bitterest rivals Liverpool in the 3rd round of the 2010-2011 FA Cup, no stranger to meeting each other in the oldest Association Football Cup competition in the world, this meeting will be the 16th time the clubs have met in the 112 participating seasons.

Highlighted red section denotes when United went on to win the FA Cup.

Newton Heath 1st tried their luck against Liverpool in 1898 after beating Walsall by an own goal in the 1st round, the second round saw the Heathens cheered on by a 12,000 crowd at Bank Street, Clayton before both teams shared the spoils after a 0-0 draw.
The match was decided after a replay down the East Lancs road at Anfield, when Liverpool progressed after a 2-1 victory, United scored through local lad & Newton Heath born James Collinson (pictured left).

Bobby Charlton,
United's Record Appearance maker in the FA Cup with 78 games

In Manchester United's 1st ever season in the FA Cup (1902/1903) by the time the Liverpool fixture came around no fewer than 5 games had already been played, Accrington Stanley, Oswaldtwistle Rovers, Southport Central & two matches against Burton United had took place before Scotsman Jack Peddie (pictured right) scored a brace to set up United's next & final match for this seasons FA Cup ironically across Stanley Park at Goodison.

World War 1 & a gap of almost twenty years had elapsed before a 1-1 draw at Anfield in 1920, a point most notable was the fact that United's goal was scored by Thomas Miller, a man who was transferred directly from Liverpool to Manchester United in September 1920.  The replay at Old Trafford was decided in Liverpool's favour after United went down in a 2-1 home defeat.

Next came an undefeated streak spanning several decades, as United enjoyed quite the record claiming a string of victories & appearances in the final after World War 2, stretching and finally coming to an end in 2006 after a Peter "does the circus know your here" Crouch goal knocked the Reds out of the competition.

Denis Law, United's Record FA Cup Scorer with 34 goals in 46 games

Meeting Liverpool down the years has been a key ingredient during the course of a Wembley cup run for United (5 occasions), in the 1948 triumph the teams met in the third round, before beating Liverpool in the Final in 1977, two semi finals in 1979 dragged United to Wembley only to lose in last gasp fashion to Arsenal 3-2. Two more semi finals later in 1985, set up the showpiece against another Merseyside team in Everton when Norman Whiteside ensured after extra time that the Trophy was Old Trafford bound.

Who then could ever forget the famous Cantona late volley in 1996 that won the Cup, arguably one of the most boring finals ever, and your Editors personal favourite, the Treble winning season in 1998-1999, when an early goal (3') from Liverpool's then, now United's Michael Owen, grabbed an early goal for the visitors at Old Trafford, try as they may the Reds could not find the breakthrough, but a very late strike from Dwight Yorke (88') and another even later one from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (90'), snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the most dramatic of circumstances...........ahhh the magic of the FA Cup.
