Manchester United have today announced the signing of
Fulham defender Chris Smalling for a reported £8 million
pounds. The defender from Greenwich, London will join
the Reds in the summer and be immediately loaned back to
thee Biggest Club in West London Fulham FC.
Smalling an U21 international
has saw his career spiral "Roy of the Rovers style"
almost into orbit considering the young defender was
applying his trade for non-league Maidstone little over
two years ago.
With European experience in the form of the Europa
League & a growing amount of Premiership appearances
under his belt, SAF & his scouts decided to bid
especially after Arsenal & Arsen Wenger showed interest.
“It just looks like Manchester United offered more money
than us,” said Wenger. “As long as the player has not
signed anywhere, it is not the end of it. Let’s see what
happens there.
A statement from ManUtd.com said: "Manchester United has
agreed terms for the transfer of Chris Smalling from
Fulham. Chris has agreed personal terms with the club
and will join for the beginning of the 2010/2011
campaign. He will remain at Fulham until the end of the
current season."
Smalling made his debut for Fulham at the end of last
season & received praise from his now Manager Roy
Hodgson when the Fulham boss said of Smalling's European
Debut against CSKA Sofia “If you analysed his
performance, he played with a maturity I'm not entitled
to expect from a player so young.”
An U21 England debut in November of 2009 was quickly
followed by a league start against Chelsea as the young
star continued to rise
